Introduction to
Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS)

Why POCUS?

This course is designed to provide extensive training in the core practical and clinical applications of emergency ultrasound to improve patient care

Curriculum

This 1-day course will give you the skills to confidently integrate POCUS into your everyday practice. Learn through hands-on scanning, image interpretation, case discussions, and evidence review. The course covers;

  • Physics & Knobology – commonly used systems, image optimization and hand control
  • Extended FAST exam – perihepatic, perisplenic, subcostal & pelvic windows & thoracic scanning
  • Focused Cardiac – global systolic function, chamber size, pericardial effusion/Tamponade
  • Vascular – IVC and Aorta
  • OB-GYN – early pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, common abnormal pregnancies & normal pelvic anatomy
  • Integral Ultrasound – Beginning to integrate ultrasound into the care of the critical patient
  • One-on-one instruction with numerous facilitators learning critical high-yield do’s and don’ts for ultrasound in everyday practice.

 

Who should attend?

The course is specifically designed for consultants, registrars/residents, medical officers, mid-level providers (clinical officers, PAs, NPs)  and nurses in emergency medicine, critical care, internal medicine, general surgery and family medicine.

ECG Skills Lab

This interactive workshop addresses the needs of medical students, nurses, doctors and allied health professionals who encounter ECG monitoring and traces frequently. Theoretical and practical skills in ECG Interpretation will be delivered by experienced emergency care professionals.

Course Content

  • Anatomy and physiology of the heart and conduction system
  • Lead placement for recording a 12 lead ECG
  • Interpretation of the 12 lead ECG
  • Ischaemia Infarction and the ECG
  • Rhythm recognition
  • Clinical case studies

Learn to interpret:

  • 12 lead ECGs & rhythm strips using a systematic approach
  • Understand cardiac axis and its impact on the ECG
  • Rhythm abnormalities
  • Identify the effects on the ECG following infarction
